Does my pet really need a collar and a tag? The short answer is YES! Find answers to your questions about the importance of collars and tags for your pet:
1 in 3 pets will become lost in their lifetime, and without ID, 90% will not return home. We don’t want this to happen to you, and we don’t want to continue seeing so many animals come to us and be unable to find their families! A collar with a tag is the first and fastest way to bring your pet home to you, and it’s incredibly important that your dogs and cats always be wearing both and that your contact information is up to date!
Is this really an issue?
The short answer is YES! Over 10 million pets are lost in the United States every year, and we can’t overstate how important it is that your dog or cat have a collar and tag at all times. There is a significant chance that your pet will become lost at least once in their lifetime, and a collar and tag can help ensure that they’re identifiable and come home to you!
What if my dog or cat stays inside?
Even if your dog or cat is an indoor pet, this doesn’t guarantee their safety. Pets often find their way out one way or another, and some pets take any open door as an opportunity to run out and explore! If your pet gets out without a collar and tag, it becomes much more difficult to identify them and bring them home.
What if my dog or cat is microchipped?
Microchips are a great second line of defense, but they don’t provide the visual cue and easily accessible owner information that a collar and tag provide. If someone finds your pet without a collar, they may assume they don’t have an owner, never check for a chip, and either keep or rehome your pet while you’re left heartbroken wondering where your furry family member could be!
What if my dog or cat doesn’t like collars and tags?
There are many different light, comfortable collar options for your pet, and there are also options to have your information engraved on a metal plaque on the collar itself, no tags needed! Keep in mind, dog license tags are still required to be worn in Clovis. For more on dog licensing, visit our FAQ page.
What if my pet’s collar gets caught on something and injures my dog or cat?
Collars are unlikely to become caught if properly fitted, but we understand this concern! There are many breakaway collar options available online that will break off if they become caught on something and are pulled. This can help protect your pet should this ever take place, though these collars are notably less secure. If you choose this option, it will be even more important to have your pet microchipped as well! Clovis Animal Services offers microchipping services through Miss Winkles Pet Adoption Center.
